Mastering Centrifuge Tube Selection: Ensuring Accurate Results in Lab Applications

As simple as this choice may seem, the accuracy of your test depends on selecting the right centrifuge tube and yes, it does affect the result.

First, let’s get the basics out of the way.

Centrifuge tubes are basically vessels that contain liquid samples to be placed in an equipment known as the centrifuge. The samples are spun really fast to separate various components of the liquid. However, they are also suitable for a few other lab applications as well.

These tubes are a staple in every research lab, medical clinic and are used extensively by scientists and professionals across a range of industries.

What are the types of centrifuge tubes available?

Centrifuge tubes vary in capacity, shape, color, and most importantly quality. Even though they might look the same, they aren’t. While the main selection is based on the application of the tube, every good quality tube should have:

  • Clear sample identification and graduation
  • No sample contamination
  • Secured sealing
  • Ability to withstand the required top speed

How do I choose the right tube for my application?

1. Know exactly what you would be using it for

Just as we mentioned above, the main selection of centrifuge tubes is based on how you will be using it. Whether it is light sensitive, what temperature will the sample be stored at, the G force being applied, etc.

2. Capacity

You can choose from a variety of volumes available between 0.5 ml to 200 ml. The more popular ones are 15mL and 50mL for centrifuge tubes and 0.5 mL and 2mL for microcentrifuge tubes.

3. Shape

Self-standing centrifuge tubes are easier to clean and handle but conical tubes are time-tested and fit into microcentrifuges as well. The choice will also depend on the type of sample being held in the tubes.

4. Material

Ideally you should go for chemically resistant materials to avoid contamination of your samples. You can choose between plastic resin or glass. The difference being that plastics are easier to handle and are lightweight. But it is always safe to purchase tubes that are US FDA approved.

5. Graduation Marks

Ensure that the graduation marks are clear and legible for optimum ease of usage. Additionally, a large writing surface makes labeling and identification super easy.

6. Sterility

Depending on your requirement, you can choose between sterile and non-sterile tubes.

7. Temperature Resistance

It is always advised to have centrifuge tubes that can withstand high and low temperatures to make them useful for a variety of applications.

8. Compatibility with centrifuge rotors

Make sure the tube is compatible with the centrifuge rotor being used. If you are not sure about the compatibility, you should refer to the manuals that generally come with the purchase of a centrifuge and rotors.
